From blood tests and urine analysis to digital X-rays, ultrasound, and dental imaging, we have the tools to build a clear picture of your cat’s health. We’ll explain the findings in plain, reassuring language and give you plenty of time to ask questions, so you feel confident in every decision about your cat’s care.

Laboratory
Our on-site laboratory allows us to run most routine tests quickly and efficiently, including blood tests to check organ function, electrolytes, and red and white cell counts. We can often have results within 20–30 minutes, which is especially helpful for cats who are unwell. We can also analyse urine, fluids, ear swabs, and cells under the microscope. While most tests are done in-house, some specialist tests are sent to external labs, with results usually returned within 3–7 days.
Radiography
X-rays are a fast and effective way to look inside your cat, especially for bones, joints or internal organs like the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. At our Edinburgh clinic, we use digital radiography, which produces high-quality images in seconds and often reduces the number of exposures your cat needs. The images can be enhanced on-screen to give our vets the clearest view possible, helping us make accurate, timely decisions while keeping your cat calm and comfortable.
Dental X-Rays
Dental issues are very common in cats, and appearances can be deceiving — a tooth that looks healthy on the surface may be resorbing or diseased beneath the gum, while a tooth that looks worn may actually be sound. At The Cat Clinic, we use dental X-rays alongside routine dental procedures under anaesthesia to see beneath the gum line, ensuring we provide precise, effective care for every tooth.
Ultrasound Scanning
Ultrasound scans give us a clear view of your cat’s soft tissues, such as the liver, kidneys, bladder and heart, helping us understand what might be causing illness or rule out concerns. Using a small handheld probe and gentle gel, high-frequency sound waves create real-time images that let us see movement, blood flow, and organ structure. Our recently upgraded scanner provides exceptional detail while keeping your cat comfortable.
