Summer Cat Care Questions Answered by our Vet Jenny

Summer in Edinburgh often means holidays, BBQs and, for outdoor cats, more time spent exploring outside. But the warmer months can also bring plenty of seasonal health questions for cat owners. From heatstroke and hydration to travel safety and summer allergies, there are a few important things to keep in mind during the season ahead.

Why is my cat sleeping more during hot weather?

Jenny explains that cats often become less active during warmer weather to avoid overheating. It is normal for some cats to rest more during the hottest parts of the day, but extreme lethargy, weakness or collapse should always be checked by a vet - book an appointment.

Why is my cat drinking more water in summer?

Increased thirst can be perfectly normal in warm weather, particularly after a day spent sunbathing. However, excessive drinking alone or alongside changes in appetite, weight or toileting may indicate an underlying issue, so it is worth monitoring closely.

Do indoor cats still need flea treatment?

We don't usually advise routine flea prevention for indoor only cats and this risk doesn't particularly change with the warmer weather.  Jenny suggests that you discuss your cat's lifestyle with your vet and agree together on an appropriate level of protection.

Can cats lose their appetite during hot weather?

Some pets naturally eat a little less during very warm periods. Offering meals during cooler times of the day and ensuring constant access to fresh water can help. Any wet food left out tends to go stale very quickly causing many cats to refuse it.  It's usually a good idea to offer a smaller amount more frequently to prevent this.  However, a complete loss of appetite or vomiting should not be ignored. Why is my cat itching more in late summer?

Grass pollen, environmental allergens and flea activity can all contribute to itching during late summer with the added risks of harvest mites in areas throughout the east coast of the UK. Persistent scratching, licking paws or skin redness may indicate allergies or irritation that require veterinary support.

Why has my cat become more restless recently?

Changes in routine during summer holidays can sometimes affect cats more than owners realise. Extra visitors, warmer nights or inconsistent schedules may lead to restlessness or attention-seeking behaviour in some cats.

Should I still book a routine health check if my cat seems fine?

Absolutely. Routine health checks can help identify subtle problems before they become more serious. Jenny explains that many early health concerns are easier to manage when spotted promptly.

How can I keep my cat comfortable during warmer weather?

Provide plenty of fresh water, shaded resting areas and opportunities to cool down indoors. Cooling mats and frozen treats can also help pets stay comfortable during summer.
