Caring exclusively for cats

Prescription Medications

Many illnesses can be entirely resolved with a short course of treatment, but others will become chronic conditions that require ongoing medications.

The majority of medications/treatments recommended by the vets in our clinic are classed as POM-V meaning that they are prescription strength and can be prescribed by our vets only to patients ‘under their care’.   Guidance from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons requires a patient to have a full health check at least every 6 months for them to be considered ‘under our care’.
In practice, this means that we are required to examine your cat every 6 months as a minimum in order to continue to prescribe ongoing medication.  In some cases, however, the status of the patient’s health will necessitate more frequent check-ups to allow monitoring of any ongoing illness and to ensure that any continuing medications are still safe and appropriate. We are only able to prescribe medication for the advised health check interval period, which may be less than the statutory six months.
Our vets will discuss with you their recommended check up frequency based on your cat’s health status. These decisions are all made on an individual basis and are there to balance patient safety and owner convenience.

In between check-ups, you may request refills of ongoing medications, known as a ‘repeat prescription’.
With each medication request, our vets will review the request alongside your cat’s clinical notes and authorise further medication use where appropriate. They may contact you for an update on your cat’s health before authorising more medication or even request an in clinic health exam if things have changed.

All medication requests and written prescriptions are processed in the same way and ideally require 48 hours to process.  If you are in need of medication more urgently, please let our reception team know that this is the case.

Antibiotics can only be prescribed at the time of a full health exam and are not appropriate as repeat prescriptions.

Repeat Prescriptions
  • From the clinic
Refills of any ongoing medications can be requested from the clinic either by contacting our reception team, by phone or email, or by requesting a ‘repeat prescription’ via our online appointment booking system on our website.   There is no prescription fee associated with this type of request, just the cost of your medications.
  • Written Prescriptions
You may request a written prescription for many of your pet's medications.  As with all prescription medications, we can only do this for animals under our care.

Fees associated with a written prescription
  • Each medication requires a separate prescription, each of which is chargeable.
  • Payment is required before your written prescription is collected or emailed to you. This can usually either be done over the phone or via a payment link that one of our reception team can send you.
  • Refunds cannot be issued on written prescriptions once processed.

Written prescriptions can often be written for more than one use, this will depend on the patient’s medication and interval for further examination.

Medication classed as controlled drugs are generally unavailable as written prescriptions. There is the occasional exception to this, and such controlled drugs prescriptions will be for one use only.  The quantity will be restricted to a 28 day prescription at any one time.

Written prescriptions are valid for up to 6 months in the case of POM-V medication (unless a shorter period is stated).  Written prescriptions for controlled drugs are valid for 28 days (unless a shorter period stated).

Written prescriptions for some parasite medication can in some cases, be written for a 12 months supply.  Please ask at the time of request.
