THE
MAINE COON:
Appearance: North American breed, one of the largest
of cat breeds; Males can weigh up to 8kg although they are slow
maturing, taking up to 3 years to reach full size. The coat
requires daily attention but is silkier than the Persian and
less prone to matting. They have a distinctive ruff, large prominent
tufted ears and are quite muscular. Most colours are present,
apart from pointed varieties.
Temperament: Affectionate, intelligent, free-roaming
cats best suited to homes with access to the outdoors. Often
like to play with water.
Hereditary Diseases: Hip Dysplasia (malformed hip joints).
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (weakness of the heart muscle leading
to heart failure)
