THE
BIRMAN:
Appearance: Legend says that a white temple cat sat
next to a dying head priest in Burma. Whereas his paws remained
white where they touched the priest, his yellow eyes turned
blue, his head, legs and tail darkened and the fur along his
back turned golden. This was the first Birman cat. The breed
is a pointed in colour with 4 white gloves on the front feet,
and two white gauntlets extending up the hind legs. The fur,
although long, is less likely to matt than other long-hair breeds,
but still requires daily grooming. The Birman is a medium sized
cat.
Temperament: Intelligent, friendly, gentle.
Hereditary Diseases: Epibulbar dermoids (growths on
the surface of the eye with hair growing from them). Portocaval
shunt (blood bypasses the liver, leading to build up of waste
products in the cat’s bloodstream). Abnormally high levels of
kidney waste products in the blood - usually indicates kidney
failure but in Birmans no evidence of this has been found.
