CHOOSING A CATTERY:
Your cat has a very special place in your life so make sure
it is properly looked after when you go on holiday.
A good cattery can be recognised by the following points:
- You should be asked to produce an up to date vaccination
record card for your cat
- The cattery should look and smell clean
- Pens should have enough space to allow a cat to exercise
adequately while it is boarding
- Pens, bedding, food and water bowls should be easy to clean
and disinfect
- Cats from different households shouldn't be able to come
into direct contact with one another. A high number of cats
(even vaccinated ones) are virus carriers so there needs to
be a physical barrier to protect your cat
- The cattery owner should ask about your cat's diet and
medical history and obtain contact details if a problem arises
while you are on holiday
Have a good look round a cattery before your cat boards there.
If the owner doesn't allow this, ask yourself what they're trying
to hide. Ask which veterinary practice they use in the event
of an emergency. Ask if they have isolation facilities in the
event of a boarder becoming unwell. Ask how they heat the pens
in cold weather.
You should feel completely comfortable about leaving your pet
cat with the cattery.
Nowadays you can also consider arranging for a catsitter
to care for your cat at home while you're away.
